Cottage Grove's Fall Calendar Is Already Built. It's Just Not On Main Street.

This Saturday, if you drive past Warm Belly Farm on Vilas Hope Road, you'll hear it before you see it. A band called Fast Lane is booked to play the beer garden, with a crowd standing between rows of corn maze and a sunflower field gone gold at the edges, kids running the low ropes course, somebody's dog waiting patiently outside the ticket tent. This is not a pop-up. It's the third weekend of a festival that opened September 12 and will keep running, weekend after weekend, straight through Halloween.

Meanwhile, half a mile from the village's actual Main Street, nothing is happening at all. Not because Cottage Grove lacks ambition for its downtown. Because the downtown the village has been planning for years is still exactly that: a plan. The fall calendar you'll actually live by this year runs through two addresses that aren't on Main Street, and understanding why tells you something real about how this village works right now.

Every Weekend Through Halloween on Vilas Hope Road

Warm Belly Farm's "Full Harvest" festival is the anchor. It opened for its first weekend on September 12 and 13, took a rest day on the 20th, and has settled into a steady rhythm since: Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry is timed, so you pick a slot when you buy in, which tells you something about how much foot traffic this place is planning for on a given Saturday.

The draw isn't just the corn maze or the pumpkin patch, though both are there, along with a sunflower field, tractor rides, apple cannons, and a kiddie maze for the under-ten crowd. It's the beer garden, which books live music nearly every Saturday and Sunday of the run:

A Distillery Booking Into January

If Warm Belly Farm owns the daytime and early evening, Doundrins Distilling on Progress Drive owns the nights. The distillery's own events calendar lists more than twenty separate live-music dates between September 10 and New Year's Eve, with shows already booked into the first week of January. That averages out to more than one live performance a week, every week, for close to four straight months, inside an 11,000-square-foot outdoor cocktail garden that also happens to have a playground and a policy of welcoming dogs.

Doundrins is a genuine production facility, not just a bar with a still in the back. It distills its own vodkas, whiskeys, and fruit brandies on site and self-distributes across the state, showing up on shelves at Woodman's, Festival Foods, and Total Wine. But the reason it matters to your Tuesday or Thursday night is simpler: it has quietly become the village's most reliable source of things to actually do after dark, on a schedule dense enough that missing one week barely registers before the next show is already up.

What the Village Has Actually Bought So Far

Here's the part that puts the rest of this in context. Cottage Grove's village government has been trying to build a real downtown for years, and it has the paper trail to prove it. The village has purchased properties at 101 E. Cottage Grove Road, 123 E. Cottage Grove Road, and 612 N. Main Street, and finalized an offer on another parcel nearby, all funded through Tax Increment District 9 rather than new borrowing. Village Administrator Matt Giese has said the village has been reinvesting roughly $900,000 a year in TIF revenue generated by the Authentix apartment complex toward exactly this effort.

As recently as last November, the Plan Commission voted to rezone several of those parcels from Planned Business to Central Business, a preparatory step meant to clear the way for future development while grandfathering the residential uses already there. The village's comprehensive plan, last updated in 2020, is being refreshed this year specifically to define what a "central" Cottage Grove could look like, with public input sessions and design work still ahead of any developer solicitation.

Village President Cindi Kelm-Nelson put the underlying problem plainly:

"Cottage Grove does not have a central downtown or gathering place like many other communities do."

That's not a criticism. It's a fair description of where the process actually stands: land assembled, zoning adjusted, a plan update underway, and still no developer, no design, and no completion date. The gathering place is a few years out at the earliest.

Which is exactly why it matters that Warm Belly Farm and Doundrins Distilling have already filled that gap from the outside in. Neither one sits inside the TID 9 boundary or anywhere near the parcels the village has spent years assembling. Both built their own version of a gathering place on industrial and agricultural land while the formal planning process worked through zoning votes and consultant RFPs. 1855 Saloon & Grill, at 218 S. Main Street, builds its menu around Red Angus beef raised and processed within two miles of the kitchen, and its screened porch is a reasonable bet if you want dinner before heading to a Doundrins show later. Oakstone Recreational, family-owned since 2019, does scratch-made food daily and doubles as an event venue with its own volleyball league, which makes it a fixture rather than a seasonal stop. Outpost Bar & Grill sits a few doors down on South Main, rounding out a stretch of village blocks that, for now, still functions more as a dinner run than a destination in its own right.

What This Means If You Live Here

The honest read on Cottage Grove this fall is that two separate calendars are running at once, and they haven't collided yet. One is public, funded by tax increment revenue, and moving at the pace of comprehensive plans and rezoning votes. The other is private, already ticketed, already booked through New Year's, and running on land the village doesn't own.

That's not a knock on the downtown effort. Land assembly and comprehensive plan updates are slow by design, and $900,000 a year in reinvestment is a real commitment, not a placeholder.
